Living guide for keeping the original vibe of old buildings in restoration-old building restoration in Jingzhou

Born and raised in Jingzhou since childhood, we always call ourselves “children of the Yangtze River.” This is because this river fed us until we grew up. As we get older, we begin to slowly recall our childhood days, and sometimes we even dream of things of the past, such as the cargo distribution center — the Shashi Wharf and the ad slogan "Super 28 — Shashi Household Chemicals."

Today, a new era has ushered in for those abandoned old buildings along the riverside owing to the "Ecological Restoration and Conservation Project in the Shashi Section, Jingjiang River" and the “EPC Project — Phase-2 of the Ecological Restoration and Conservation Project in the Shashi Section, Jingjiang River” invested by Chengfa Investment Group and undertaken by CCCC Second Navigation Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd.

The employees of CCCC Second Navigation Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd. set foot in old building restoration for the first time and undertook two major restoration projects. Their plan was to reconstruct the Shashi Wharf into a neighborhood following the style which mixes industrial chic and the trend of the Republic of China era. In accordance with the principle of keeping the original vibe, existing old buildings, such as the Memorial Hall of Great Patriots, the packaging factory, and Daci Street in Areas A and B for Reinforcement were reinforced and revamped. Through "functional remodeling" with minimum change to their structure, new life was breathed into a set of historical buildings, such as the office buildings of Jardine Matheson and Arnhold Brothers, Lucky Flower, the packaging factory, and the old passenger waiting room.

For the purpose of coordinated Yangtze River conservation, the project team revamped old buildings in the Shashi Wharf by improving landscape (e.g., greening, fountain construction and brick paving) and supporting facilities (e.g., water supply pipelines, roads and natural gas pipelines). This not only realized the common dream of local residents: to conserve the environment of the Yangtze River and embellish the neighborhood alongside the Jingjiang River, but also made this project a living guide for keeping the original vibe of old buildings in restoration.

Today, the Shashi Wharf is playing the role of patriotic education. It arouses people’s patriotism in historical ambience and its unique style also attracts a large number of tourists. It has become a must-visit place for Internet celebrities in Jingzhou.
